“llo? . . . Mello?”
“Unh, what?”
“Mello? You’re awake! Oh thank god!”
“What . . . ?”
“You passed out! You fell into the middle of a street! Someone could have run you over!”
“Wha . . . t?”
Mello couldn’t move, it felt as though his body was made of lead. He also couldn’t physically feel his body. He couldn’t see either. His only senses wear hearing in one ear, smell, and taste.
Mello started remembering what had happened the last time he was conscious. He had escaped Kira and the Japanese police, but had lost the Death Note.
“Dammit,” Mello grumbled.
“Does it hurt? It shouldn’t, I gave you painkillers! You shouldn’t be feeling an-“
“Shh, you’re . . . kinda loud.”
“Oh, sorry.”
More memories flooded his mind. After escaping the hideout, Mello had called Matt with the emergency number Matt had told him to call if he was in a life-or-death situation. Mello begged him for assistance in taking down L’s killer, and had collapsed while crossing the street.
“Matt, how . . . long have - ?”
“You’ve been unconscious for fourteen years.”
“Wha-?!”
“Just kidding! That’s for costing me my last life on a Galaga game. I was on level 254! Do you know how long it took me to get to that level?!”
“Heh.”
“?”
“Heh heh heh ha ha ha ha ha ha . . . ! I m-missed you so-“
Mello passed out, suddenly going from unconscious for several days to being excited to see Matt again was more than he could take in under three minutes.
Matt sighed, Mello was always getting into trouble. Ever since they were children, they had been the best of friends. Before Mello had left Wammy’s, Matt had made sure that Mello could contact him and tell him how he was trying to surpass Near and kill Kira. However, this had been the first time that Mello had called him. Although Matt was happy to see his best friend again, he was deeply pissed off that Mello had never called him once since he had left.
Matt sighed. He wanted Mello to tell him what had happened to him. How had he gained these scars? Why hadn’t Mello called him? Told him about where he had been all these years? Why did he need to suffer so much for doing something he believed in? For doing something righteous, and ending a mass murderer’s reign of terror?
Matt smiled. At least Mello looked like he was working hard to complete his plan, and didn't cheat to get as far as he had.
Matt admired Mello's determination.
